Ecology and Eco-Villages

There is great concern about the damage we are doing to the planet, threats of global warming and global dimming, also the health of human societies. For these reasons many people are exploring such things as alternative energy sources, ecologically friendly farming and the creation of eco-villages. Some artists are also looking to ways in which their work can sensitize us to the environment.

We shall shortly be adding examples of an Eco-Village in Goa, India; one in New England; and the work of some artists at the RANE project in Falmouth, England.

The Schweitzer Earth Corps

It is easy to grow hopeless today. How can we stop global warming or species decline? How can we gain economic justice in an era of global capitalism? How can we find inner calm in a postmodern world getting ever more frenetic? Yet, when idealism dies, we risk becoming either apathetic or cynical and egocentric. Students participating in the Schweitzer Earth Corps learn how to effect change, both within and without. They do so through a combination of experiential and academic studies, directed towards:
  • cultivating dynamic balance in their own lives;
  • encountering the other through reverence, a deep way of beholding that springs from a realization of oneness rather than division;
  • understanding the science of chaos and complexity and discovering how complex systems work—and how they can be transformed through the art of gentle action.
